Monday, January 21, 2013
Friends Select School will be closed in observance of  Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 21, 2013.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the Friends Select School Parent Association is hosting a day of service at 9 a.m. on Monday, January 21, 2013 at Andrew Jackson Elementary: 1213 S. 12th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147 (corner of 12th and Federal Streets). Sign-up to volunteer.

Andrew Jackson Elementary School is a Philadelphia Public School working hard to rise above its challenges and provide an excellent education for close to 400 students in grades pk-8. Partnering with their principal, Lisa Ciaranca-Kaplan, we have several projects we would like to complete to make the school environment more cheerful.

Inside:

Painting stair risers and doors

Emptying and organizing library closets

Tuning guitars/piano

Deep cleaning classrooms and windows

Bar-coding library books

Outside:

Decorating chain link fence with plastic ties (weather permitting)

It is important that we have an accurate count of FSS volunteers so please sign up. There is no cost to participate, all ages are welcome.

Be prepared, you will need:

  • Clothes to get dirty
  • Brown bag lunch or snack
  • A paint brush, if you have one
  • The school is in need of books for pk-8th graders. Specifically, multicultural non-fiction children's books. If you can bring some to donate please do.

There is on street parking. The closest SEPTA stop is at the school on 12th and Federal on the 23 bus line.
