Friends Select School will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 20, 2014.
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the Friends Select School Parent Association, Upper School Helping Hands Club, and Passyunk Square Civic Association is hosting a day of service at 9 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2014 at Southwark Elementary School: 1835 S. 9th Street (corner of 9th and Mifflin Streets) and Andrew Jackson Elementary: 1213 S. 12th Street (corner of 12th and Federal Streets).
We ask that you sign up here so that we have an accurate volunteer count and plenty of jobs for everyone. We will also email you the meeting location, and other pertinent information.
Both locations can be reached using SEPTA and have on street parking.
These two Philadelphia public schools enroll between 400-600 elementary students and serve the diverse south Philadelphia community. These schools are working hard to rise above current challenges and provide an excellent education for their students. Partnering with principals at both schools Andrew Lukov (Southwark), and Lisa Ciaranca-Kaplan (Andrew Jackson), as well as a liaison form the area's neighborhood association, Beth Dougherty, we have developed several projects which will make the school environments more cheerful (painting), and easy to use (organizing).
We are mindful that Friends Select volunteers encompass a wide age range, and will make every effort to insure something for everyone. In the upcoming weeks we will post more details about the day's plans.
